Without wishing to belittle the possible political significance (not to mention the human tragedy) of Benazir Bhutto's assassination, I must say that I laughed heartily when I saw that Gordon Brown has accused her killers of being "cowards afraid of democracy".
Because, for the avoidance of doubt, this is the selfsame Gordon Brown who has in the past few months backed down from holding a general election, and reneged on Labour's manifesto commitment to hold a referendum on the EU constitution. Yes, it's that Gordon Brown. Not another one.

Doesn't Broon know that Democracy will only empower the Isl*mists? What planet is Broon even on?
Nobody will "restore" democracy to Pakistan in the near future, or perhaps at any time. Democratic institutions as we understand the term - under the impartial rule of law - have never been established in that chaotic nation . It's staggered from one military government to another, with a few interludes of corrupt civilian rule.
Benazir Bhutto was the photogenic darling of the Western media. She looked a lot better than your average militant Iman. But Musharraf is more likely (than Benazir) to strike a belligerent pose against the fanatics who infest Pakistan.
When it comes to posture politics, we have an acknowledged Grand Master of that game right here. Gordon the Great is our world champion political mountebanke: he seems to have swallowed one of those a random quote generators that you can play with on the Internet.
Griffin must go!
