Stoical British Reserve

The Evening Standard billboards that sit outside virtually every newsagents in London are this evening bearing the headline:
Thames Floods: Prepare to Flee
A tad melodramatic, perhaps?

Sandwich board time. "Repent! Repent! The end is at hand!"

I can't help thinking that most folk would be better off stocking up with water and staying put at home. Obviously not on for the infirm, new-born, or bungalow dwellers. But I wouldn't want to be an evacuee if there was any way of staying put safely. Even with the gas and electricity turned off, home is still home. You can take bottled water and some tinned food upstairs, so long as there is an escape route from the upper floors.
Maybe the most important thing is to move our cars to higher ground. Not to save the cars, but to stop them bobbing around in the flood water and breaching their fuel tanks. Fire on the water we don't need.
But it can be much more dangerous to try to walk across flooded territory when you can't see potentially dislodged manhole covers.

Watch out for angry territorial swans while you are making your escape through the floodwater then Bernard.....
